Top 10 Best Followers in Skyrim

Skyrim is still going strong, even after all these years. With the release of the Skyrim Special Edition, it’s about time the best followers were covered. These NPCs journey with you, encountering huge beasts, betrayals and quests. You should always choose the follower you personally like the most but some are better than others. If you need help or just interested, here’s the 10 best followers in Skyrim!

10. Golldir

This follower is obtained by discovering Hillgrund’s Tomb, he’ll be waiting inside. A quest opens, go through with it and he’ll be available to follow you afterwards. He’s a fighter type companion, specialising in heavy armor and one handed weapons with a modest 438 HP.

9. Vilkas

Vilkas is available as a follower after the Companions quest-line. He has very high skills in two-handed weapons, heavy armor, blocking and archery. He also has an exceedingly high HP of 621. He’s a perfect follower for ranged players as he can act as a frontline tank, even to the biggest of foes.

8. Mjoll the Lioness

Found in Riften, Mjoll requests aid from the Dragonborn, to find her sword Grimsever. If the player completes this quest, she becomes available as a spouse or a follower. She’s a highly skilled follower with high stats in two-handed, heavy armor, blocking and HP. She’s another front-line tank who can really help archers and mages on their adventures.

7. Stenvar

Stenvar is a rugged mercenary with a lot of Stamina to stay in the fight. With good stats in two-handed, heavy armor, block, archery, stamina and health, he’s a strong potential follower. He can be found in Windhelm, specifically the second floor of Candlehearth hall. Highly recommended follower for those who want a beefy, high damage tank.

6. Annekke Crag-Jumper

Calm down guys, she has a husband. Annekke is a well skilled thief class follower with stats in light armor, archery, one-handed and block. She is obtained by visiting Darkwater Crossing and speaking to her, she’ll give you a quest which you need to complete. She has low HP but if you’re a in-your-face type of player, she’s great to have on your back.

5. Farkas

Farkas is a good all-round follower with above average stats in a lot of positions. He also has a high 620 HP, these stats make him a capable fighter in all situations. He’s obtained via the Companions quest line.

4. Aela the Huntress

Yet another member of the Companions, Aela the Huntress is an awesome and effective follower. She’s most effective with light armor, one-handed, sneak and archery. She also has fairly high HP and speech. You really want her as an archer though, she can take out enemies quickly and silently.

3. Jenassa

One of the first followers you will likely come across, Jenassa is a master archer. Like Aela, her archery and light armor skills are very high. However, Jenassa sacrifices sneak for stamina. She has a lot more stamina and HP than Aela. She can be recruited by paying 500 Gold to her in the Drunken Huntsman, found in Whiterun.

2. Housecarls

All of the Housecarls have the exact same stats so they’ll all be under one entry. They are all masters of heavy armor, block, one-handed and have the second highest HP of all followers in the game with 671. They are also relatively easy to obtain as followers, you just need to become Thane of a certain Kingdom. They are sworn to carry your burdens!

1. J’Zargo

No idea why he’s as powerful as he is but I’ll leave the reasoning to Bethesda. He’s a Battlemage with the highest level-cap of all followers. To obtain him you need to complete a quest given to you by him. He’s an apprentice in the College of Winterhold.

Weirdly, he has a maxed out heavy armor skill as well as one-handed. He also has maxed out stats in destruction, restoration and illusion magics. To make things even more bizarre, he has the highest HP out of all followers in the game, at 717.

J’Zargo’s damage output is fairly low as he only uses apprentice level spells. So if you’re a tank-like character who needs a high damaging follower, you might want to look elsewhere. Otherwise, J’Zargo can’t be bettered by any other follower!

I personally love my sarcastic spellsword Teldryn Sero, blade for hire. He’s the best follower for me. A bit overzealous at times, but they all get into trouble sometimes. Serana is awesome too but Teldryn and his neverending sass win me over.

She requires a DLC so might not be available to all 🙂 She’s my personal favorite though!

Serana is by far the best follower I have ever had. Raises dead from afar, has great destruction spells, and uses life drain. Not to mention she can’t die. A top whatever list of followers that does not have Serana on it is invalid.

Do any of those talk to you like Erandur? He’s my favourite because he’s not as silent. Also, most of these are tanks, and I’m the Leroy Jenkins type. 😜 I need more distance fighters, either magic or archery.

I never tried J’zargo and usually start a playthrough with Erandur before I let Inigo take over. After the civil war and with Alduin defeated, I enjoy the rest of the game by digging up artifacts for the Dragonborn Gallery with Ulfric Stormcloak as my third and last companion.

Looks like I’m going to have two Khajiit (J’zargo + Inigo) as companions this time (for my current playthrough)…

Followers are widely used as distractions, and he has the highest HP of all. I will make a point about his lackluster damage output though!

Honestly I think both Darkiethis (I don’t know how to spell his name) and Aranea Ienith should be on this list! They are both extremely powerful and loyal (although Aranea gets pretty touchy when you accidentally hurt her)

Cicero should definitely be on this list. Some people might think he’s annoying (it’s your opinion, but it’s still wrong) but he has really amusing dialogue, he’s marked as essential, and he is willing to do just about anything and everything you ask of him. He’s also one of the most unique followers. Adorable little Cicero!

Mercurio has actually served me quite well. Seems pretty good with destruction. But I’ve only had one companion to compare to before him and that was ‘Uthgert the Unbroken’

I’ve played them all at one time or another, and I’m going to add my vote for Serana. With her necromancy skills, she often counts as two followers, when you think about it. Her resurrected thralls are a great distraction during big fights… although I have seen Serana resurrect some weird things from time to time. In one fight, she resurrected a nearby dead chicken and I laughed for 20 minutes afterward. It was hilarious to watch the undead chicken-thrall pecking everything to death. But anyway… Serana is an awesome follower, if you can put up with her occasional whining about the bad weather and so forth.

Volstag? Like… no one? Says the best stuff about his surroundings. Great in battle. Doesn’t steal my kills. Never complains *coughs*Serana*coughs*. Always wants the Divines to smile upon me. Carries all my stuff with no complaints *coughs* LydiaMyLove *coughs*. Doesn’t talk all the time *coughs*Mjoll*coughs*

    Volstag? Anyone?

I *married* Volstag. He’s a pleasant companion, with good conversation, a strong fighter, and I have nothing bad to say about him. Pleasant to look at, too. Good voice. With the “pick this up” glitch can carry virtually an infinite amount for me. And since I enjoy “taking photos” in game, the fact that he’s photogenic doesn’t hurt, either.

I loved Illia as a follower (from darklight tower), a great mage follower with Destruction, Restoration, Alteration, Conjuration, uses fire, frost and shock.

Unique phrases and just the right amount of sneak vs aggression. Ultimately I made her a steward, and the option follow again is gone (one of her glitches).
