Season 6 was incredible, regarded by many fans as containing the best episodes ever. The new season had a lot to live up to and my god, did it deliver. We got action sequences larger than any ever seen on television, story-lines came to satisfying endings and yet, season 8 can’t come quick enough. Many of those battles contained characters we’ve never seen fight or beloved characters fighting enemies they didn’t even know exist. Rankings the best fighters is always going to be difficult, they all have different experiences and combat styles. Judging from what we’ve seen this season, I’ll rank the 10 best fighters in the Game of Thrones universe!
MAJOR SEASON 7 SPOILERS ALERT
Note: I am leaving out Ser Gregor Clegane, he’ll obviously be first on any “fighters” list by a huge, huge margin.
He’s finally returned & the memes can finally stop. Gendry was only known for using his immense strength for smithing so it was a massive surprise when we saw him pull out that hammer. Unfortunately we didn’t get too much time to see his fighting skills but the bits we did see show he has some talent there. He doesn’t have the training or experience of others on this list though, so he only gets the 10th spot.
9. Tormund Giantsbane
That moment where Tormund was screaming “Help me” while being attacked by the wights was the most scared I’ve been for a character ever. Thankfully his plot armor kept him alive though, otherwise we’d have lost one of the best fighters available for the Long Night. Tormund is a beast, so why is he only number 9 on this list? Put him up against the others on this list in a 1v1 and see what happens. While he is ferocious and strong, he lacks experience of ‘Westerosi’ combat, making him vulnerable to anyone above him on this list.
8. Ser Jorah Mormont
Despite reaching the later stages of his career, Ser Jorah is a very capable swordsman, as he’s proved during his numerous fights. Slaying a Dothraki Bloodrider in single combat is one thing but holding your own against an army of wights is another. He’ll be a stellar soldier to have in the wars to come, I suspect he’ll have a much larger part to play in the future.
7. Ser Bronn of the Blackwater
Ser Bronn has all the traits a great, honorable fighter could need. Unfortunately he uses his skills for the good of himself, rather than a lord or for the common people. He’s quite old so it’s obvious he has a long history of fighting. His experience as a cut-throat is unmatched across the Seven Kingdoms, Ser Bronn will have no trouble taking down any Westerosi. That’s where his usefulness ends though, we saw how he fared against the Dothraki in the “Spoils of War” episode.
6. Grey Worm
As Grey Worm himself has specific, he was never the tallest or the strongest of the Unsullied trainees. Hell, there’s likely a number of Unsullied who are much better fighters than him. He has the bravery and leadership skills to be the Commander of the Unsullied so he’s pretty much a main character, which is why he gets in the list over a random Unsullied soldier. This leadership doesn’t have any bearing on his fighting skills but Unsullied are famously good soldiers, he had to make an appearance on this list.
5. Euron Greyjoy
Unless you’ve read the books, no one would have guessed Euron is such a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield. We only see him fight in one battle against Yara & Theon but he displays incredible combat prowess, even taking on two of the sand snakes with ease. Yara Greyjoy is a fine fighter herself but she stood no chance against the might of Euron. It is a pity we saw so little, I desperately hope we see him fight the White Walkers next season, however unlikely that is.
4. Sandor Clegane
A life-time of fighting has toughened Sandor Clegane up. He was formerly known as The Hound but that was the name of a man who served a King and killed for pleasure. Sandor Clegane is the main with empathy and with aspirations to make the world a better place. You could argue his previous persona was much more intimidating but Sandor has only gotten better with age and is still one of the best fighters in the Game of Thrones universe!
3. Brienne of Tarth
Viewers were blessed with just a few scenes of Brienne swinging her sword, neither of which were in a real battle. Regardless, it can’t be denied that she deserves to reach the top 3 of this list. Lady Brienne shows valor, honor and strength in battle. She is all that’s good in the realm, only wanting to put her great skills to use for a deserving lord or lady.
2. King Jon Snow
I’m comfortable saying the King in the North is without the best fighter in the realm with a sword, he’s overcome way too many foes to think otherwise. From White Walkers & wildlings to cut-throats and Bolton soldiers, he survives by being so good with a sword in his hand. It seems his story has led to him being the Prince Who Was Promised, it’s going to be so awesome when we see him leading his huge armies out to meet the Night King!
1. Arya Stark
This was a difficult decision but I think overall, Arya can beat any fighter in Westeros in single combat. How Arya approaches a fight is entirely up to her, allowing her to choose the best time to reveal herself or stick her enemies with the pointy end. Even if we don’t take this into account and we focus on her fighting abilities purely from a fair 1v1 situation, she’d still make number 1 on this list. Her agility, mind-games and lethality make her capable of defeating anyone.
